Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180514-E93C3-2147387995. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Master Forge GD4825 (Four-burner gas grill on rollers, collapsable metal side trays.). Incident: I was heating the grill yesterday (May 13, 2018) to cook a Mother's Day dinner for my wife and mother-in-law. When I looked outside to check temperature, I saw dark smoke billowing from the grill and also could see flames in the undercarriage of the grill, far below the burners. I was very concerned that the propane tank might ignite or explode. I grabbed a fire extinguisher (dry chemical) and sprayed the front of the closed grill, then around the side. I was then able to reach and turn off the four burner controls on the front of the grill. The fire in the undercarriage (below the burners, above the propane tank) kept re-igniting. After giving it a big blast from the fire extinguisher, I was able to manually turn off the valve to the propane tank to the fuel line. I blasted it again with the extinguisher and waited a couple minutes before I went to disconnect the fuel line from the propane tank. When I started to unscrew the fuel line, it fell to the side - the fuel line had been completely severed. My belief is that the fuel line was touching a hot part of the grill and that it ruptured and caught fire, spewing propane into the lower part of the grill. I purchased this grill in the spring of 2012 from Lowes in West Philadelphia. I never received any information about a product recall. I have children who are 7, 5, and 3; I am grateful that it was cool day and none of them were near the grill. No one was injured, but we were all pretty scared.
