Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180522-26870-2147387791. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: GE CGS990SET8SS (GE Cafe Series Double oven Model CGS990SET8SS, SERIAL #TG173717P). Incident: GE Cafe Series double oven Model CGS990SET8SS purchased 10/29/2016. We were cooking lasagna in the bottom oven at 350 degrees for about 2 hours. I changed the temperature setting to 425 as it was not hot enough. Within minutes I heard an electrical pop sound. After looking for a few seconds I noticed the lights were out on the control panel and the owner oven stopped working. Everything else worked. We had a GE repair tech look it today and I mentioned the igniter problem I read about as he was checking other things and stated he was a bit lost on this one when I explained the symptoms. He opened the bottom plate to find a dime sized hole melted through the solid steel bottom. He then ordered parts, scheduled a repair date for June 5th, and gave me the customer relations number and left. The bottom oven igniter is installed too close to the oven metal bottom plate. The igniter over time melts a hole in the metal bottom plate in turn shorting out the system on mine and blowing out the control panel. I called GE Customer relations at 1-1800-386-1215 and they only offer a 20% coupon for parts only. GE makes a fix for this problem but they HAVE NOT ISSUED A RECALL. And they will not inform consumers nor fix the problem. My repair will be between $400-$600. The appliance costs over $3000 new. The internet is littered with this exact complaint AND GE has the modified part already. This could easily have ignited the floor beneath. It melted a dime sized hole completely through solid metal which sits only about 2" above the bamboo floor it sits on. This will start fires and/or kill
