Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180714-2827B-2147386809. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: GE Model TFX30PPDBWW (GE Freezer Ice Maker). Incident: I was defrosting the freezer side of a GE refrigerator-freezer. I had turned off the freezer side. I was just about finished removing the ice from the bottom of the freezer when above my head the ice maker, which was in the off position and hadnt been used in nearly seven years, started sparking and burst into flames. I closed the freezer door to extinguish the flames and then unplugged the refrigerator. I contacted GE the next day and they had a repairman out on July 5th to examine it. He confirmed that the ice maker had caught fire and removed it from the freezer compartment. The refrigerator operates fine now. GE contacted me about the repair but when I asked if the engineers wanted the ice maker to identify the cause of the fire they said they werent interested. My ice maker spontaneously caught fire. Why wouldnt GE be interested. My house could have caught fire if I hadnt been in front of the appliance. I kept the ice maker as proof. I have pictures.
