Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180717-26A45-1777426. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Whirlpool GU9S0SCGB0 (dishwasher). Incident: The submitter set the unit to a normal wash cycle and while he was in the living he smelled a burn odor. He walked into the kitchen and noticed it was coming from the unit. He indicated that the lights on the control panel were off. He opened the door and noticed water on the bottom. He also saw flames near the side of the unit and immediately contacted the fire department. He used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. The fire fighters arrived shortly after and they removed the unit because there was still a fire risk. The submitter said there are burn damages inside the unit, on the side and the floor was damaged while the unit was hauled outside. He contacted the firm and reported the incident (M-18-237243). He was told that his unit was not recalled and they would not assist with any replacements or compensation for property damages. The submitter also contacted his home insurance company and filed a claim. They have issued him a check but they told him his monthly premium will be going up and he is not sure whether he will return the check to them.
