Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180806-BD4B0-2147386347. Severity: Injury, First Aid Received by Non-Medical Professional. Product: Jennair JDB1275AWY (Jenn-Air Floating Glass Steam Option Dishwasher). Incident: Hi have a Jennair Dishwasher Model JDB1275AWY. This dishwasher failed with the heating element on causing the unit to overheat. If the machine is in the off state and the dishwasher door is closed, the heating element will turn on and continue to heat up until it reaches extremely high temperatures until it melts plastics and can combust wood. In my case my wife burned her had removing metal tongs from the dishwasher not knowing the dishwasher had a thermal event. Additionally the unit melted down and deformed metal cups ([REDACTED] Brand), [REDACTED] spatulas and miscellaneous bowls and other utensils. Whirlpool knew this was a possible event that could happen but because my unit was 10 years old, Whirlpool figured that this was merely normal wear and tear. If weren't home this unit could have easily started a fire and burned down my home.
