Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180810-6FAA7-2147386263. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Samsung S7 (Samsung S7 Cell Phone). Incident: On August 3, 2018, my 2-year-old Samsung S7 cell phone was on my night stand, plugged in and charging overnight. At 1:00 AM, it began shaking. As I woke up and looked over, the phone began hissing, emitting smoke, and spontaneously caught fire. A 5-inch flame shot from the phone and it took off like a rocket from my nightstand. The power cord pulled it back, and fortunately it fell into a waste basket. Still on fire and billowing smoke, I grabbed the waste basket and dumped the contents into my bathroom sink, now filling with water to extinguish the fire. I did nothing out of the ordinary to this phone for it's entire lifetime, simply charging it and using it each day. The power cord in use at the time was the one that came with the phone. I am informing your agency about this product safety concern for obvious reasons, as you need to know that Samsung cell phones still have this issue occuring today, August 2018. It is a serious public safety concern.
