Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180810-7D4A8-2147386250. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: General Electric JVM1950SR1SS (GE over range Microwave Oven Model JVM1950SR1SS). Incident: GE Microwave Model JVM1950SR1SS Microwave was off and not in use for several hours. Around 10PM I was woken up by a single popping noise coming from the Kitchen. I noticed the microwave was glowing and appeared to be on fire. The microwave melted the glass plate along with the plastic stirring ring and enamel lining in the microwave prior to me being able to remove power and stop the fire. GE did send out a tech the next day. The tech condemned the unit (since it was unrepairable). The tech DID NOT try to find the cause of the problem. He did not open up (besides the door), turn on, or investigate past the cosmetic condition of the unit. If I were not home, I am sure my condo would have had a major fire in it. My product was an unsafe unit. GE does not acknowledge any problems with these units and only offers a $25 gift card towards the purchase of a new unit.
