Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180810-B23B0-2147386256. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: KIDDE KN-COSMXTR-BA (KIDDE Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Model # KN-COSMXTR-BA). Incident: I purchased a combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm around June 2017, it was working fine for about a year, until the alarm started going off for no reason. The model is KN-COSMXTR-BA made by KIDDE, it was purchased at a local Home Depot. I changed the batteries, even though I did not get a low battery warning from the device. A couple of weeks later, the alarm started going off again for no reason, this time I thought perhaps it is the humidity in the apartment? I took the batteries out again, and used compressed air to remove any dust that may be impacting the sensors, after replacing the batteries back into the device, I pressed the Test Button, the alarm would just sound, and the device failed the Test cycle of the unit. I contacted KIDDE and explained the issue to them, the sent a replacement unit, free of charge, this time when I put the batteries in the new replacement unit, the unit made a few chirping sound, but also failed the Test Cycle. I contacted the manufacture again, and they are going to send another replacement unit. As concerned parent with 2 young toddlers, I think something terrible may happen to other consumer who have purchased this model.
