Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20181116-B2832-2147384309. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Honda EU 7000 (7000 watt gasoline powered generator). Incident: On the late evening of October 13, 2018, the lights flickered and then we lost power. I looked outside and saw large flames coming from my Honda generator. I rushed out, grabbed the fire extinguisher from my truck and, luckily, was able to extinguish the fire. The front of the generator, wires and connector leading from the generator to the solar charger/regulator had melted. Needless to say we had no electricity after that. The generator is rated to provide 7000 watts of electricity with a maximum draw of 30 amps. I later checked the amperage with the TV, washer, and microwave running and it was only 15+ amps. We have had solar power for the past seven years. The installation was done by licensed electricians and the installation was inspected by the local electrical inspector. Until the 13th, we have had no problems with the solar system or the generator and associated cabling.
