Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20181229-F736D-2147383500. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Coby COBY TFDVD170 Portable DVD Players With Built-in TV Tuner. Incident: Coby portable DVD Player / TV had been plugged into a wall electrical outlet in a bedroom for 2 days and was being used to play music CDs. Tonight, flames started violently spitting from the base setting off the fire alarms. The wall paint was burned, and thew fire would not be put out by blowing. I unplugged the Coby and brought it to the bathroom sink and doused it with water. After about 30 seconds, the fire was out, but there was smoke and burning bits of plastic trailing the path from the bedroom to the bathroom. We never received a recall notice and are the original purchasers of the Coby device. Had someone been sleeping in the bedroom, serious injury or death could have occurred. Had no one been home, the spray of flame was so violent that the house could have burned down before the fire department would have arrived on site.
