Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20190214-4E857-2147382715. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Belkin Model F7U011dq (Belkin 27 Watt Power Adapter USB charger, Model F7U011dq, USB-C + USB-A Home Charger + Cable (USB Type-C)). Incident: I want to report a potential fire hazard safety concern regarding the Belkin 27 Watt Power Adapter USB charger, model F7U011dq. I plugged in the USB charger while in flight to an AC power outlet provided at the seat. I connected the charger to an [REDACTED]. The USB charger was intermittent in charging. I observed arcing and heard a sizzling sound coming from the charger. This appeared to be happening at the pivot point on the charger at one AC input prong. I immediately pulled the charger from the AC outlet. There was no arcing at the AC outlet itself. The same arcing and sizzling occurs when I plug the charger into a home power strip. There is what appears to be carbon deposits from the arcing visible at the pivot point of one AC prong. I am concerned that if I leave the charger plugged the charger will start on fire or start the outlet on fire. I can provide photos. I purchased the charger at Walmart on 2 Jan 2019. It was brand new in a sealed box. I tried contacting Belkin Technical Support at 1.800.223.5546 to report the issue and was not able to get to speak to a human. After 13 minutes of going through menu choices and being place on hold I gave up. Maybe you all can get Belkin's attention. If this arcing is a common issue it could lead to a fire on an airplane or at home.
