Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20190624-3695F-2147380302. Severity: Injury, Emergency Department Treatment Received. Product: Blackweb 10400mAh Portable Battery with LED Readout (Walmart Blackweb 10,400mAh Portable Battery with LED Readout UPC#068113123033). Incident: Our client purchased a Walmart Blackweb 10400mAh Portable Battery with LED Readout on Saturday, November 10, 2018. The battery had a 70% charge when he purchased it. He charged his phone with it on Saturday without having charged the battery. He charged the battery on Sunday, November 11, 2018, though connection to a USB port on a wall plug. He took it to work with him on Monday but did not use it. At approximately 6:58 am. on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, the client put the battery in his right back pocket as he prepared to leave for work. As he was putting his lunch box in the car, he felt a warm pressure in his right back pocket and heard what sounded like a coke bottle spewing and he noticed smoke around him and realized the charger had burst into flame. He tried to get the battery out of his pocket with his right hand but was unable to, so he dropped his pants and stamped the fire out with his boots while his pants were around his ankles. He went to the emergency room and was treated for second degree burns to his right buttocks and right hand. He reports that he never dropped the battery, banged it on anything, didn't sit on it, and did nothing out of the ordinary that would have caused the battery to explode and catch fire like it did.
