Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20190706-F476E-2147380052. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: LifePod LifePod Power Bank (LifePod 10000mAh Power Bank External Battery Portable Charger Pack with Built-in Type C and Micro USB Cable for [REDACTED] Cell Pho Sold by: INSTAdealZ). Incident: On June 10, 2019, while my wife was just about to leave the house, she noticed a hissing sound coming from the direction of a small wooden file cabinet in our bedroom. She went over to the area and noticed that the sound was coming from the LifePod Power Bank, which was not connected to an outlet or device, and which I had purchased from Amazon on April 15, 2019. This is the cut-and-paste from the Amazon entry: LifePod 10000mAh Power Bank External Battery Portable Charger Pack with Built-in Type C and Micro USB Cable for [REDACTED] Cell Pho Sold by: INSTAdealZ As soon as my wife picked up the battery, it spontaneously ignited. She threw it to the floor, which scorched our carpet. She then scooped it up with a paper plate (the only thing she had nearby at the time), and flipped it into the [whirlpool tub] in the bathroom, which burned and slightly melted the tub. She was able to extinguish the battery and then brought it outside away from the structure of the house. I filed a product review on [REDACTED], who has contacted me and removed the device from its inventory. Our insurance company has authorized payment of about $18K for the damages. Thankfully, nobody was physically injured.
