Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20190718-CC39B-2147379828. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Earthwise 50220 (Earthwise model 50220 20" 12A corded lawn mower). Incident: Electric lawnmower deadman's switch and safety switch no longer operate properly -- mower starts when neither is pressed! I was mowing, and released the deadman's switch in order to move something in the yard to mow around it. The mower started slowing down, and then sped up, rapidly reaching full speed. Engaging and disengaging the deadman's switch did nothing, and now, whenever it is plugged in, the blade starts spinning even if you are not touching the mower. Ordinarily, a side switch must be pressed, and then the deadman's switch pullbar pulled back, before the motor turns on. I've had this mower for 5 years as my sole mower, so I've used it quite a lot. I looked at reviews on Amazon (where I purchased it), and although others have had problems like catching on fire or just failing to run, I have not seen anyone else mention this particular safety issue, of the safety mechanisms failing.
