Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20190911-21F2C-2147377743. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Whirlpool WFG540HOES1 (Whirlpool Gas Range). Incident: My name is [REDACTED]. I purchased a newly constructed home at [REDACTED] on December 27, 2017 from Pulte Builders. Pulte installed a Whirlpool Gas Range in my home. I have, on at least 6 occasions, experienced the inadvertent turning on of a stovetop gas burner, emitting gas without a flame. the most recent incident was September 1, 2019. While stirring eggs on a back burner, I accidentally brushed up against one of the front mounted knobs and very slightly turned on the front burner enough to emit gas but not activating the clicker needed to activate a flame. I noticed it when I smelled gas. So in other words, gas was coming from front burner with no flame, while flame on back burner was lit. Very dangerous situation. I have several neighbors who have experienced the same thing. One neighbor who was out of town for 3 weeks, and gas was discovered by friend who came by to check the house. The firemen said it would probably be about another day and the home would have exploded. Another neighbor accidentally turned on one of her burners without a flame and only realized it when someone came to her door and smelled gas the minute the door was opened. I consider it will only be a matter of time before this causes a fire, or worse and explosion.
