Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20190916-2245C-2147377664. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Maytag MDB8959SBB1 (Black Maytag Dishwasher, model number Model: MDB8959SBB - purchased in August 2013). Incident: Dishwasher was running during the cleaning cycle and started smoking and producing an acrid smell. The smoke was coming from behind the control panel in the door. There was no sign of water penetration at that location in the unit. No visible flames were evident outside of the unit. The unit is no longer functional. There was no specific harm in this instance, but the potential for harm was high. Please update with the following description for "Risk of Harm" - The circuit board overheated and started smoking. While no flames were evident outside the unit - the plastic melted and heat was sufficient to fuse the connection harness to the circuit board. The unit was installed in wooden cabinetry - which, with sufficient temperature and proximity, could have led to a whole house fire.
