Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20191001-CE174-2147377371. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Matched catalog product: Rheem Performance Platinum Electric Water Heater - XE80T12EC55U0. Source model text: XE40M12EC55U1. Incident: I keep my electric water heater turned off at the breaker box until I use it. I turned it on today and without any warning the wiring going into the water heater caught fire and burned up the wiring, protective cover, and the basement ceiling. I had to put the wire out with a rag I had to stop it from burning and hurting my hand. The correct breaker did not turn off the power which I done after I got the fire close to being put out. This happen within 10 minutes of turning it on if I were sleeping, or away from home I could have lost my life and home. There was no warning from Home Depot where I purchased it, or on the Rheem website.
