Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200108-253EA-2147375524. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Product: Kitchencraft Healthy Options 9.5" Skillet (Masterclass Healthy Options 9.5 inch Skillet Ceramic non-stick interior is non-toxic and promotes healthy cooking by using less butter or oil. Made in China Masterclass Company CustomerCare @ kitchencraft.co.uk. +44 (0) 121 7854149). Incident: Purchased , from a local Home Goods Store, a Masterclass, Healthy Options 9.5" Skillet. on or about January 5th, 2020. Item is described as a non-toxic ceramic coated skillet which is PFOA,PFOS and PTFE free. The following morning, the Skillet was used for the first time to make Poached Eggs over a gas stove top with the flame at medium height. While heating the water in the skillet and poaching the eggs, our residence started to smell like an electrical fire burning. The home, after 2 days still smells heavily of burning electrical cord. After inspecting the entire residence and finding no evidence of anything burning, my wife called me into the kitchen to show me that the handle, made of an apparent plastic composite was burning close to the connection to the Skillet itself. Apparently, the flame started to melt the handle as the flame from the stove top flowed up the side of the skillet. The simulated wood, plastic composite handle started to burn and melt to the point that some plastic resin dripped from the handle. The care and maintenance instructions state that the handle may become hot but does not specify that the material may burn. Sent an email to [redacted*] which I received after speaking with a manager at the Home Goods store to get information on the manufacturer of the product. No information on the skillet packaging. We are concerned do to the fact that Home Goods had hundreds of this Item on sale and this burning smell may not be healthy and still permeates our home.
