Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200127-CCED2-2147375184. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Product: Whirlpool WRX735SDBM04 (Whirlpool French Door/Bottom Freezer Refigerator with ice maker & water dispenser Model #WRX735SDBM04 Serial# K70818833 Purchase date 2/28/2017). Incident: This incident is in reference to my Whirlpool Refrigerator (Model #WRX735SDBM04 Serial#K70818833, purchased 2/28/17 ) I was cleaning the bottom glass shelf of my refrigerator with a wet sponge when it spontaneously shattered for no apparent reason. The entire shelf crumbled and send shards of glass everywhere. I was in complete shock. While cleaning up the shattered shelf I had to pick small glass particles out of my fingers. After searching online I discovered many consumer reviews revealing that this was not an isolated incident that I experienced, rather a quite common occurrence with this particular Whirlpool shelf. I contacted Whirlpool customer service twice and their only response to my concerns was that my appliance was out of warranty and I would have to purchase another shelf. There was no acknowledgement of this spontaneous glass shattering as a valid consumer safety concern.
