Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200310-902D3-2147374424. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Phoebe LM-223 BR-26mm (LM-223 BR-26mm Electric Curling Brush Model LM-223 BR-26mm). Incident: I have a 2-year-old electric curling brush made by Phoebe. It has a control to set it to various temperature settings up to a maximum of 430F, but defaults to 355F, which is what I always use. The display lights up when it is on and displays the temperature. I have it continuously plugged in, but am very careful to turn it off when I am done using it and have it sitting on a silicone pad. Last week I noticed that it was quite hot, even though it had been turned off for quite a few hours and the display was not on. When I hit the on/off button, the display light came on and the temperature very quickly started to decrease, presumably to get down to the 355F default temperature. I turned it off again (the display light turns off which indicates that it has in fact been turned off), and checked it again after a few hours. The same situation occurred, with it still being on, despite the display being off, and presumably continuing to heat. Same thing happened when I turned it off, with the display coming on and the temperature decreasing. At that point I unplugged it. Thankfully I always have it sitting on a silicone pad, otherwise I think the wooden surface it was on would have burned or caught fire. I contacted the company via email and their only solution was to offer to send me a free replacement. I know I should always unplug this item, but a few things worry me about the situation. 1. The company was extremely quick to offer me a free replacement for a 2-year-old item. 2. They did not request that I return the original appliance to them in order for them to diagnose what
