Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200427-69AF0-2147372682. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: LG WT5101HV (LG Top Loading Washing Machine Wave Force Model Number: WT5101HV Serial Number: 004KWKS04165 Purchased approximately April 2011). Incident: On April 26, I loaded my LG top-loading washing machine with a small load of laundry. I ran the wash on a regular cotton cycle. About 20 minutes into the cycle, I heard extremely loud noises coming from the laundry room - it sounded like a large truck was crashing into my house or several loud explosions. When I entered the laundry room, the washing machine was violently moving and bumping the dryer next to it and the wall. The inside of the machine appeared to have exploded - the drum of the machine was no longer intact and was spinning with such force, that it damaged the metal casing of the machine. Once the metal casing / frame of the machine broke, it caused particles of plastic and other debris to shoot from the machine. My 13 year old son was with me and we yelled for a family member to help. My husband came up and unplugged the machine. When we looked into the washer, we saw that the drum was completely detached, the metal parts of the machine completely damaged and warped, and portions of the machine seemed corroded. The laundry in the machine was covered in particles of plastic, rubber and metal and not salvageable. The incident was frightening. Had we been in the room, we wouldve likely been hurt.
