Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200428-0BFF5-2147372673. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Megabrite color changing LED night light MB-NL9A1-P (LED night light that plugs directly into a 110 vac receptacle.). Incident: We purchased a set of eight (8) LED night lights from our local Costco store some time last year. A few weeks ago my wife noticed an electrical burning smell in our laundry room but could not find the source. When I arrived from work that evening I noticed the laundry room was dark and the night light wasn't lit. Upon further investigation I observed that the night light had literally burned up in the electrical socket melting the exterior of the electrical socket with it. I took apart the night light and observed all of its internal electronics were burned beyond recognition. As a former firefighter and an electrical engineer, that told me that there was indeed a small fire that luckily for us, had self extinguished. I attempted to contact Costco customer service twice by email having yet to receive a response. I tried to do an internet search in hopes of locating a manufacturer and all I could obtain was that it is a product made somewhere in Asia. The trade name of the product is: Megabright LED Color Changing Night Lights From what I can gather is that they are distributed and sold from at least Costco and [REDACTED. I did retain the damaged device and a have a few of the undamaged ones, I also have pictures of the damaged device and the outlet prior to me changing out the outlet.
