Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200701-EAB3E-2147371374. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Sandisk Sandisk SSD plus (SKU 6 19659 14675 7 Sandisk SSD Solid state drive 480 gig S/N 201804A00AA8 Model Sandisk SSD plus UPC 6 19659 14675 7). Incident: As an installer , I purchased a solid state hard drive from Office Max on June 4 2020. The SSD (solid state drive) had been in use from June 5 to June 25 of this year. The end user notified me that he smelled something burning and asked if I would pick up the computer to have it checked out. Upon inspection I found that the SSD had self ignited and burnt. The computer was still running when the problem was discovered . No other components were damaged in the computer as the enclosure was metal and the drive was far enough away from other components. I contacted Sandisk /Western Digital regarding the problem and I think they have taken this problem too lightly. Had the SSD been installed in a laptop/notebook computer there would have been a possible fire. I had sent them photos on the device indicating that the device was burnt almost in entirety and that the wire connections to the drive were only damaged near the drive . I feel that the SSD components of that model number be pulled from the market ASAP. Office Max had discounted the drive to almost 25% of it's retail price . I suspect that Office Max wanted this series of drives GONE .
