Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200718-B256D-2147371019. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: GE Profile Dishwasher PDW7880N15SS (GE Profile Stainless Steel Dishwasher). Incident: We had a GE Profile dishwasher installed in our new house in Dec. 2007. There was one recall in Sept, 2012 and just this month, July our dishwasher overheated and nearly started a fire. Fortunately I happened to come into the kitchen and I smelled something burning. The dishwasher was extremely hot as well as the counter top. The element burnt the inside cavity of the dishwasher. We, my husband and I immediately turned off the breaker. I know the dishwasher has a long chronological date however there is just my husband and myself in the household, we are retired and we travel a lot. This dishwasher gets very little use and this should not have happened. Due to this defect which is unsafe and could have ended up worse, ie a fire, we have to turn around and buy a new dishwasher. I don't think that is fair and reasonable. GE should replace it at no cost to us because it malfunctioned. Not something we did. I called GE and they said they would give us a new one for $539.31 installed. I challenged them on this even asking for a supervisor [REDATED] and they basically said they couldn't do any better.
