Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200720-99FB6-2147370987. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Whirlpool WMH31017AS-5 (Whirlpool over the range microwave (WMH31017AS) purchased 7/8/16). Incident: In March 2020, about 3 days after being issued a stay at home order in Ohio, my less-than-four-year-old microwave (Whirlpool over the range microwave (WMH31017AS))began catching things on fire. I was not using anything new in the microwave. It ignited a paper towel and a paper plate on 2 separate occasions. I had regularly used these same brands of these items since I got the appliance. They were not new packages. The day before I used a paper towel from the same roll with zero problems. Thankfully I was right there and saw it happen and was able to put the fires out with water. I called their customer service where I was advised to turn the power level down. WHAT? The power level must be changed every time you use the microwave. What if I forgot and walked away? I could have burned my house down. Ridiculous. I have had the appliance unplugged since I do not feel safe using it and I will be replacing.
