Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200727-D0A6F-2147370835. Matched catalog product: Microsoft Surface Book. Source model text: Surface Book (Core i7/1TB/16GB RAM with Performance Base). Incident: I have a 3-year old old Microsoft Surface Book 1 with Performance Base laptop (1TB/16GB RAM), purchased May 2017. I recently pulled it out of my bag and found the chassis of the base was separated, exposing the internal circuitry. Upon further inspection, I realized the battery had swollen, causing this separation to occur. This is a clear fire/explosion risk, and although no injuries to myself or others have yet occurred, it may only be a matter of time due to the Lithium ion batteries swelling inside the device.
