Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200729-8F58D-2147370810. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: HP Hewlet Packard HP Envy X2 Detachable PC13 (HP Envy X2 Detachable PC13 tablet silver with detachable keyboard). Incident: We own an HP ENVY x2 detachable PC 13 tablet. For several weeks before the incident my wife mentioned that her touch screen seemed to be pulling away from the body of the tablet. We didn't pay too much attention thinking perhaps the adhesive was loosening and causing this to happen. One day during the week of July 10, 2020 I happened to be walking past the tablet which was on my wife's desk and saw if from a side view. I was stunned at how far the screen was pushed out from the body of the unit. I was surprised the screen hadn't cracked yet. I told the wife to immediately stop charging and/or using the tablet because clearly something has seriously gone wrong with the unit and I felt it was no longer safe to use. I wasn't certain it was but i suspected the battery. I disassembled the unit and indeed one half of the battery had swelled to the point that the vinyl covering the battery was very taunt. Before I disturbed anything further I took several images of the battery still installed in the unit to show how distorted and expanded the battery was. I then removed the original battery and placed it a safe area in the event the chemical/electrical process that was causing the defect would continue and possibly pose a safety issue. At this point I purchased another OEM battery. I replaced the battery and was able to gently push the screen and effected component back to there original position before the battery issue happened. I didn't know how to dispose of the battery so i kept it for a period of time. On Monday July 27, 2020 I was curious about what was causing it to swell
