Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200731-AB19E-2147370771. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Opolar F-531 ("Opolar battery operated rechargeable desk fan for home, camping, hurricane, 9" battery powered USB fan with metal frame, quiet portable fan with 5200 mAh capacity and strong airflow" Taken from Amazon's description of this item as shown when I purchased it. Since I filed a complaint with them, this has been taken off of Amazon's site. Model F-531). Incident: I purchased an Opolar F-531 rechargeable fan from Amazon on June 12, 2020. I charged it using a USB cable that plugged into a wall receptacle. I would charge it during the day and use the fan at night. Wednesday, July 30, 2020 approximately 15 or 20 minutes after turning it on, there was an explosion about 2 feet away from our bed at about 12:15am. Smoke instantly filled the room and we eventually discovered that the fan had exploded, burning the rug it was on, shooting a piece of metal about 6 feet away which scorched our wood floor and several minutes later we realized that one battery was missing and found it under our bed. It was searing hot and had burned down about 1/8" into our wood floor. I have photos of the damage. The battery must have shot up in the air from the floor and come across our nightstand, as a stuffed animal I had on there got burned as well. There are a few small burn marks on our wall and soot covered much of the room. This explosion was very violent and we are lucky that a fire did not start and that no one got hurt and that the damage is repairable. We do not want this to happen to any one else. I did contact Amazon yesterday (July 30, 2020) and they have taken this item down from their site. But we imagine that these batteries are in use in other items. If we had not been home when this happened, it could have burned our house down and killed our cats. I am shocked that these batteries can explode like this and are in use in many items. These could seriously inj
