Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200810-FC10B-2147370565. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: HP ENVY (HP Envy laptop). Incident: I purchased an HP Envy laptop directly from HP.com on Thanksgiving 2019. Two weeks ago, I left the PC connected to the charger which came with the laptop overnight with the charger connected to a household outlet. The laptop was in Sleep mode resting on a wooden table. In the morning, the laptop was so physically hot that I could not touch it for longer than a second with my bare hands. I feared that the laptop might cause a fire. I disconnected the charger from the outlet and placed the laptop on a non-flammable surface with a fan to cool it off. It took over 5 hours for the laptop to cool-off to a temperature that it could be touched with bare hands. After waiting a day, the laptop still functions but with almost no battery. Based on the safety standards for electrical devices, the laptop should have prevented any overcharge of the battery and the touch temperature well exceeded what is allowable.
