Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20201006-2C7F1-2021970. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Samsung NX58M6630SS (Samsung gas range with oven Model NX58M6630SS). Incident: There is a sleeve that fits on the stem, which extends from the range. This sleeve is part of the control knob used to regulate the burner temperature. The stem that extends out of the stove is made of steel and the control knob has a casting on it, that secures it to the stem. The casting developed cracks sometime in the past and eventually broke apart. This allowed the control knob to fall off, which presents a safety hazard controlling the temperature. The consumer is concerned that other knobs could also break, while someone is cooking and present a control/fire hazard. The consumer is unsure if the other controls have similar damage. Additionally, this range has 3 cooking grates on top, which are cast iron. All of the grates have rubber feet which fit underneath the grates. The rubber feet have broken off (possibly due to heat). Therefore, the grates are not as secure as they could be. This happened approximately 3 4 months ago. The consumer contacted the mfr. about his concerns. They charge $139.00 for replacement grates and $75 per knob and $10 shipping ($85 total), to replace each knob. He did not order replacement parts, because he considers these safety issues and believes that the firm should address them. The consumer read the firms warranty and that they consider the knobs a cosmetic issue. He contacted the dealer and was told this issue was not covered under the extended warranty. Its also not covered under the factory warranty. Lastly, he checked on-line and found that many other people have experienced this same problem with their stoves.
