Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20201006-3318E-2147369383. Severity: Injury, First Aid Received by Non-Medical Professional. Product: IKEA POKAL (IKEA Drinking Glass Model POKAL Glass, turquoise12 oz $1.49 https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/pokal-glass-turquoise-40342898/). Incident: Last night, after I was done cooking dinner, I called my family to the dinner table. My son, 6, sat at the kitchen table, and I put his plate of food in front of him. We were still waiting for his dad, my husband, to come down, and I was still setting the table. I went to our kitchen cabinet to grab a drinking glass for my son. He uses the same IKEA drinking glass every night of which we had (past tense because I threw them out last night) about 6. I reached in the cabinet, and grabbed the glass as one does. Just as the glass and my hand cleared the front of the cabinet, but before I could put it down on the counter to fill it with water, the glass exploded. No, I do not mean that it broke, cracked, or shattered. It exploded like a bomb! Thank goodness my son was at the kitchen table and not trailing behind me as he often does, or that my husband had not just arrived to the kitchen. The glass exploded with such force that we found shards in the hallway to the dining room, at least 20 feet away. My arm was covered in fine glass, like sand, and I had several places on my hand that were bleeding (nothing serious), caused by glass shooting out with enormous force. Shards were in my hair, down my shirt, and in the nice dinner on the stove that I had just made. And glass even made it's way over to the kitchen table where my son was sitting waiting for his glass of water. It honestly makes my heart stop to think of how much worse this situation could have been. My husband is a physicist. He tells me that the glass was defective and under enormous stress. I still don't understand h
