Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20201029-34CD0-2147368983. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Panasonic NN-SB646S (Panasonic microwave oven Model No: NN-SB646S. Csid: ATH Mfg July 2018. FCC ID VG8EM134AYYMW Serial NO. 6G 78250440. Sticker on back has this serial number: EB06128420518719110456.). Incident: Son reported microwave ran with door open week ago. I couldn't reproduce problem. But after heating a small cup of water for 25 seconds today, and the timer stopped and the display cleared indicating off, I could hear a vibration continue. The magnetron was still on even though the display indicated off! I unplugged the microwave and the plug gave a large spark indicating heavy current use, even though the display indicated off. The water was much hotter than 25 seconds of use would indicate. Very dangerous condition, with magnetron staying on in off state. If I had opened door, it may have given me heavy exposure. If I had walked away with the microwave still stuck in the on state, the water would have boiled away and the machine run dry, possibly causing a fire.
