Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20201119-FD5D9-2147368020. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: GETIHU Undecipherable (This was the product description as of 2019-2020 on amazon.com GETIHU Portable Charger, Ultra Slim 10000 mAh Power Bank, 4.8A High-Speed 2 USB Ports Battery Pack with LED Flashlight, Compatible with [REDACTED]). Incident: On Saturday, November 14th, 2020, our household had a GETIHU lithium ion battery explode in our kitchen. The battery made a pop noise and then there was a small flame. At the point where my husband tried to carry the battery out of the house (through a sliding glass door) with a spatula, it then fell on our hardwood floor and began spinning and spewing out ash and sparks. My husband was finally able to contain it by putting it in a bowl full of water. The damaged battery and two similar batteries now reside in a metal container on our driveway (concrete) out of fear of further combustion. I want to report this because when I made the manufacturer aware of this through their customer service email, they have repeatedly tried to get me to send the damaged battery back to them in China via USPS (illegal). After my concern about illegally sending this damaged battery, they then suggested that I send it to a hub in California via UPS (I know that UPS allows for shipment of damaged lithium ion batteries under certain circumstances). However, they do not have the proper permits for ground shipping via UPS and they have not provided me with a safe container for transport. Moreover, they would be putting *my* name as the return address, making me liable for any damage that could happen en route. GETIHU has pulled their listing of this product from amazon. com. I purchased one battery on August 18. 2018 and two similar batteries in June of 2019 (June 5 and June 22). The listing read as: "GETIHU Portable Charger, Ultra Slim 10000 mAh Power Bank, 4.8A High-Speed 2 USB Ports Battery Pac
