Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20201126-1C4B3-2147367872. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Hamilton Beach - Type SC77 120v - 60Hz 450w 33195 (Hamilton Beach Slow Cooker (Black), Oval shape (long axis = 14"; small axis = 11.5"). It was a present.). Incident: Our relatively new & hardly used Hamilton Beach slow cooker (Model #33195; Series: H3391DJ) had a short at the entry point through the bottom, which produced a BIG spark near my daughter's face & long hair, as she leaned over the slow cooker. A small fire followed that melted the outside wire's insulation at various points along the chord, all the way to the electric outlet. It also burned a spot on the electric outlet & on our wooden table top, but no one got hurt. We had the setting in low to keep our Thanksgiving ham warm. I opened the slow cooker's shell & discovered that the wire connections were only covered by a small tube that easily slides in either direction. I just sent a complaint to Hamilton Beach, but am concerned that the inside insulating tubes on this model are not secured & slide so easily off, exposing the electric connections. We also still need to have the house wiring & outlet inspected to see if the house wiring suffered any additional damage.
