Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20210112-B066D-2976082. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Dura-flame DF1020ARU (Dura-Flame Electric Fireplace Model DF1020ARU). Incident: The consumer indicates that he entered his dining room and I noticed the faint burning smell after I tried to start the unit. The consumer tried to turn on his fireplace by its switch but it would not do so; he then tried to use its remote to turn it on but it wouldnt. The consumer unplugged the fireplace and heard rattling coming from inside after he picked it up. When the consumer dismantled the unit, an orange electrical cap that was loose fell out. The consumer picked up the cap and noticed that it was charred. The consumer kept inspecting the unit and saw two or three wires that were also burnt. The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation; the representative he spoke to informed him that they will not be assisting him because of the age of the unit and because it was no longer under warranty; he was also informed his model is no longer manufactured. The consumer states that the unit was used during cold weather four or five times out of the week for about one to three hours each time. The consumer plans on keeping his fireplace for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.
