Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20210125-72F90-3005299. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Whirlpool WFE710H0AS (Free standing, electric range with oven). Incident: The oven was set to 350 degrees and within approximately 5 minutes, the temperature jumped to an extremely high setting. The home became filled with smoke. The consumer immediately unplugged the oven from the wall outlet. They were baking cookies at the time, which caught fire and burned up. There was no other damage to the home, outside of the cookies burning and the smoke emitted. 12/2021: The consumer called the manufacturer, but due to Covid issues, they waited January 2021, before allowing someone to come to their home. 1/15/2021: A manufacturer authorized technician came out and checked the range. The tech. told the consumer that CNTRL-ELEC (Part# WPW10340304), needed to be replaced. The consumer followed up with the mfr. again and initially, the mfr. reps (names unknown) told him that he had to cover the cost on his own. The consumer said he was not comfortable with the safety of this product. His concerns were submitted to a higher authority for review. The consumer next spoke with [REDACTED] (Mfrs. Mgr), Tel: 866-930-3583. ext. [REDACTED]. After some back and forth, [REDACTED] told the consumer that they could offer 40% off the purchase of a new range or they would buy it back for 40% of what he paid. NOTE: Even if the consumer decided to repair this range/oven, the part was back-ordered for weeks and there is no time frame when he may get the part. Therefore, he is not sure how he will proceed at this time.
