Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20210302-9F480-3086480. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: The Classic Edge Outdoor 50 Stove Classic Edge Outdoor 550 (The Classic Edge Outdoor 50 Stove Outdoor wood furnace 2 story home Model Classic Edge Outdoor 550). Incident: The consumer filed the report on behalf of her mother. Cresote ate a hole through stove side even though it was well maintained. The welds on the firebox broke and this allowed anti-freeze to leak from the unit onto the ground. The consumer said there were approximately 400 gallons inside the unit, when this occurred. The consumer's brother saw that the tank was leaking and he stopped it. He then drained the remaining anti-freeze from inside the unit and cleaned up the spill. The consumer called the dealer and spoke with [REDACTED], who sold the stove to them. [REDACTED] arranged for the stove to be picked up and evaluated. The dealers technician (name unknown), said that he could re-weld the machine, but could not guarantee that the repair would last at least 1 year. The stove is still with the dealer. The dealer charged the consumer $500 for picking it up and for examining it. Next, the consumer called the manufacturer and reported the problem to their rep. [REDACTED]. [REDACTED], told her that she could purchase a replacement. He also said that the consumer could pay to ship the stove back to their manufacturing facility for evaluation (at her own expense), but if they could not fix it, they would discard it. The consumer declined both options, as she paid $7, 729.00 for this unit and $1500.00 for installation, less than 6 years ago. The consumer has a back-up furnace, but if she did not, she would have been without heat this winter. The consumer believes that this could present several types of hazards.
