Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20210524-5F9F5-2147363953. Severity: Injury, Level of care not known. Product: Jenn-Air 720-0063-lp, 2004 (Jenn-AirThis is a stainless steel Jenn-Air gas lp grill. Model 720-0063-lp, 2004). Incident: I [REDACTED] planned to cook a chicken on my Jenn-Air grill (model 720-0063-lp, 2004) using the rotisserie capability. I had cleaned the grill and checked the rotisserie motor to ensure that it rotated. After putting the chicken on the grill rotisserie unit, I turned it on and put a pan underneath to catch the drippings. I then turned on the rotisserie heating element at the back of the unit, and turned on the rotisserie motor to ensure it rotated correctly with the heat turned on. After watching it for a few minutes, I closed the cover. In about 10 minutes, I glanced over to see the grill and saw that it had caught on fire at the area where the plastic button is to ignite the rotisserie. I quickly turned off the gas and cut off the cap that was burning on the grill to stop the fire. The fire also burned the gas hose that goes to the lp tank, as well as the wire that goes from the rotisserie igniter button to the rotisserie heating element. I feel very lucky that I saw the fire before it burned completely through the hose to the lp tank. It might have caused an explosion or significantly larger fire. I have pictures of the grill after the fire and fragments of the burned pieces. I sustained some minor burns to my fingers trying to stop the fire before it spread, but just put them in water for awhile.
