Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20210627-0E96A-2147363250. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Hyundai 2000SI (Blue Hyundai 2000SI Inverter Generator). Incident: I purchased a Hyundai 2000SI Generator, and it failed during recent routine use and was no longer under warranty. After starting the engine, you could hear arcing/sparking and the Overload light illuminated on the control panel. This happened, even with nothing connected to the generator. I am an Aircraft Electrician, so I perform many repairs myself. Upon disassembling the generator, I discovered that the inverter coils and other components were only installed with plastic zip ties (commonly used for securing wiring harnesses - not in place of correct mounting hardware). The zip ties ultimately failed, permitting the coils to move, chafe and short out. There was evidence of burning/overheating, and this component is located directly below the 1 gallon gas tank. A fire in this area could melt the gas supply hose, and cause a catastrophic fire. This is manufacturing negligence, not a fair wear and tear failure. Upon performing an online search, other videos documenting the same condition were easily located. I have several photos showing the damaged components.
