Product: Honeywell Home RTH6580WF1001 (Honeywell Home WIFI thermostat Model RTH6580WF1001 UPC 085267771955). Incident: Device installed by homeowner per instructions from manufacturer and had functioned properly for 3+ months. Beginning Friday July 9th, 2021 the residence HVAC system stopped. The blower circuit was repeatedly blowing fuses. Called today (7-9-21)and HVAC tech responded. No defect to the blower control board or AC system noted. Went to thermostat and pressed the button to activate display backlight and SMOKE immediately came out. Home owner immediately detached thermostat from mount. Internal inspection revealed chip on thermostat printed circuit board failed and melted part of the housing. Incidentally I found an RFID anti-theft tag inside the WIFI thermostat, perhaps to enhance wifi ? The overheating chip is labeled "MCC BTR" . Malfunction (smoke) witnessed by HVAC tech and homeowner. I have the device and pictures of the chip that overheated and melted housing. WIFI thermostat Honeywell home model RTH6580WF1001. Thankfully no injuries. I called and online chatted with Honeywell support, and all they wanted to do was accuse me and HVAC tech of causing the problem.
