Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20210802-FCF6D-2147361425. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Amana AMV2307PFS-2 (Stainless steel & black over the range microwave). Incident: My 2 year-old microwave CAUGHT FIRE two weeks ago due to a defect (thankfully I was right there in front of it & promptly put it out). Got word last week that WHIRLPOOL REFUSED TO REPLACE IT and expected me to pay $398 to have it repaired. After escalating the issue through telephone calls and social media, they called and told me they will be replacing the unit (exact same model) for free. Unfortunately, it wont be here for another 2-4 weeks, since theyre back-ordered. They declined to pay the difference for a higher level model thats in stock. The fire was in the area of the wiring & magnetron (mechanism inside). The local fire company took photos for their files (they came and inspected to be sure the fire was out and diagnose the root cause). Absolutely stunning failure by Whirlpool/Amana to stand behind their product until the consumer makes a stink. For what its worth, I did some research and found out that a similar line of over the range microwaves was recalled about 2 years before this one was manufactured. I worry that the replacement unit may also be defective and catch fire, as its the same model. Also, I shouldnt have to pay for an upgrade (otherwise wait 3-5 weeks for a replacement) if the current model isnt in stock.
