Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20211102-E720C-2147358969. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Kenmore Elite Gas 790-31073100 (e: Fire in Kenmore Elite Gas Slide-in Range; Model# 790-31073100; Serial# NF23827270I;). Incident: Fire in Kenmore Elite Gas Slide-in Range; Model# 790-31073100; Serial# NF23827270I; Purchased at Sears in San Bruno, CA on 10/28/2012 On 10/29/2021 I was preheating my Kenmore Elite Range oven. Suddenly there was white smoke and a pronounced odor of gas. My 85 year old husband opened the oven door and a huge flame shot out toward him. He turned off the oven and the fire would still not go out. He then attempted to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher as I called 911 and the fire department. The fire was finally extinguished. The Fire Department requested that we vacate the premises until they could shut down the gas line and electricity to the oven. The oven is a complete loss and the kitchen will have to be cleaned by professionals to remove the damage from the smoke and chemical residue left from the fire extinguisher. The only injuries were to my husband and myself with the air quality of the home. I have asthma and my husband has COPD.
