Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20211104-67D34-2147358947. Severity: Injury, First Aid Received by Non-Medical Professional. Product: Black + Decker CM2046S (BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker CM2046S, Silver/Black https://www.blackanddecker.com/products/small-appliances/kitchen/coffee-and-tea/12cup-thermal-programmable-coffeemaker/cm2046s). Incident: I purchased the BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker on 11/2/21. I opened the machine that evening and ran plain water through the brew cycle to clean the machine as instructed. After the cycle ran, I picked up the carafe to pour the hot water into the sink. When I held the carafe back up to a level position, the scalding hot water ran back around the top of the carafe and onto my hand. I was burned and immediately iced the area. I was shocked that this happened and told my husband what had just happened. He filled the carafe with cold water and tested out what I described. The water ran back onto his hand as well. I have concerns that someone else could get severe burns - including a young person or child. I returned the coffee maker the next day due to the safety concern. This was a painful and disappointing experience.
