Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20211211-38D93-2147358475. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Product: Amazon Basics AOKE-1701 (A silicone baking sheet reinforced with fiberglass. We specifically used the "Amazon Basics Silicone, Non-Stick, Food Safe Baking Mat - Pack of 2" found here: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Silicone-Baking-Mat-Sheet/dp/B0725GYNG6/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=baking+sheet+silicone&qid=1639254989&sr=8-5 A simple search on amazon leads to many nearly identical products: [REDACTED]). Incident: We were using silicone baking mat purchased from Amazon Basics in our over. The mat must have shifted in the oven while cooking to touch the inside of the oven. It promptly caught fire, started smoking, and ash started blowing all over the kitchen. Later we found out that the mat is made of fiberglass and the ashes were likely contaminated with it. We were both coughing significantly after the incident. No where on the product page was it mentioned that this product had fiberglass in it. If it had, we would not have purchased. Furthermore, reviews and social media are filled with people who cut these sheets in half, and thus unknowingly exposing themselves to the fiberglass material on the inside. People also report being able to see the fiberglass protrude on the surface of an undamaged sheet, or seeing it come out if the sheet is bent too much. The manufacturers should do a lot more to disclose the safety issues with this product. This goes not only for the specific sheets we used, but all silicone baking sheets using fiberglass by other companies.
