Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20220126-1B3A3-2147357821. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: ComfortBilt HP55 (Comfortbilt HP55 pellet stove). Incident: I contacted the company I bought my pellet stove from, and they told me the pellet stove I bought was recalled but they never sent out a recall notice and the unit almost killed us, my family and I, multiple times. I bought an HP55 from Comfortbilt and from day 1 it was having issues and comfortbilt sent out replacement items to try to fix it but the third time I called with issues they said it had been recalled but when I called them today they said it wasnt recalled and they do not have to reach out to customers but the unit is dangerous. I had it installed correctly, and it did run for a few months but this winter it filled the house with smoke twice with in the first few weeks of using it again. I had cleaned it as described in the user manual from the beginning. So, its not dirty. Ive pulled the unit out now and the pipes were clean and the inside of the unit was clean but the cold air return had black fluid in it and it had been dripping that fluid on the stone pad the unit sat on. The last time it filled the house with smoke the unit had black goo on the burn pot and fire box. Comfortbilt made no effort to troubleshoot the unit or resolve the issue. Report Update: The manufacturer warned me, only after I contacted them about the unit multiple times, to stop using the unit because that unit could have the front glass explode causing a house fire or injuring anyone standing near the unit when it exploded, or it could fill the house with smoke which could result in smoke inhalation or other smoke related injuries.
