Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20220525-1462C-2147356013. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: NiteIze Nitehowl led SAFETY necklace (NHO-28-R3) (NiteIze Nitehowl LED SAFETY necklace, light up dog collar available in green, blue, and red colored LEDs.). Incident: I purchased NITE IZE NITE HOWL LED SAFETY NECKLACE in the winter of 2020-2021. It's a dog collar that is charged by 3 lithium button batteries. I only used them about a handful of times and just last week noticed that the lights were very dim, so I went to replace the button batteries and upon opening the back, I saw that 2 of the 3 batteries was extremely swollen. I changed the batteries and left the old ones on top of our 3D printer. A few hours later, as I was talking on the phone with a good friend and walking past our 3D printer, I heard what sounded like a gunshot, a huge POP right as I walked past. After I collected my thoughts and verified that i was not hit and that all my windows were in tact, I noticed one of the button batteries had exploded in 3 different locations about my dining room and hallway to my kitchen. Then I noticed 2 different walls that were located next to pieces of the button batteries were damaged by this explosion. It had exploded with such force that it took off paint and made a huge indentation in my kitchen wall and also threw another piece directly into my dining room wall. Luckily, the explosion just merely missed hitting me! If I had not took those batteries out of the collars, 100% they would have exploded and killed my dogs! These should be taken off the shelves at once to prevent this from happening to a sweet innocent pet. I've purchased this from the store Petpeople in Aurora, IL but I'm aware that they are on sale as well currently on [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED], and list goes on.
