Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20220630-3647A-2147355306. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Black and Decker TO1760SS (Black and Decker toaster oven model TO1760SS). Incident: When I first received this new toaster oven, a replacement for another model which was defective, I top-broiled a piece of bread with pesto to warm it. All went well. When I did it again the next morning, the unit exploded, knocking off the handle and scattering glass up to seven feet away. This happened as I was approaching the toaster oven to remove the heated breadit was sheer luck that I was not close enough to be splattered with the glass. It took me an hour to clean up the glass and deposit the unit safely into the original box. Glass shards were all over my kitchen. Report Update 6/30/22: At my request, Spectrum representative [REDACTED] with the warranty division of Spectrum Brands, returned my request for a call. One of my questions was to be advised whether there had been other incidents e.g. explosions that blew off the door, shattering glass for six feet. I am awaiting word whether they want to have the damaged unit shipped to them so their Engineering and Quality Control team could examine it. I was very disturbed to learn that whatever they learn is proprietary and would not be released to the public. So there is no way to know how frequently this happens or has happened. I saw on your website reports of fires, of units being turned off, but not really turning off. The units were not identified as to model. I do not think this type of information should be withheld from consumers. I could easily have been badly injured or blinded when the glass door exploded and shattered as I was approaching the unit to retrieve the toast. This is the second item, manufa
