Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20220707-0AA08-2147355174. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: Whirlpool WFE320M0JS (Whirlpool black 30 inch freestanding flat top range model number WFE320M0JS). Incident: I bought a new Whirlpool range (WFE320M0JS) about a month or so ago. I was using the oven and preheating it when there was a loud pop and my oven went dead. It had tripped the breaker. I went to turn the breaker on again and set a new, higher temperature for the oven which it reached within seconds. The range was almost searing hot to the touch near the sides and started smoking from an unknown area so I turned the breaker off again. I had only used the oven once before this point so it wasn't from any food in the oven and the previous time I used it there had been no smoke. I contacted a repair technician through Whirpool's website who told me that a control board failed and the heating element was stuck on and heating continuously and it would have been about 30 minutes before it basically melted the oven. It probably would have started a fire if that happened as well. I have barely used this device.
