Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20220823-31BC9-2147354249. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Kitchen Aid KUDS03CTBL3 (Kitchen Aid built-in dishwasher). Incident: I bought this washer 10-12 years ago and I am also an electrical engineer doing hardware design as well as field failure analysis. For years when the washer is running a smell came from it. I always thought it was steam making the cabinets MDF smell which is very similar to electrical printed circuit board overheat smell. This weekend the washer was off and after determining the breaker and switch were ok I searched on [REDACTED]. I found this link [REDACTED] you can see he also had an overheating issue. He attributed this to an object in the macerator but I dont think that was the root-cause. My macerator was free to spin. I think there is an inherent design flaw on the power input side of the board. Either the contact rating is not enough or there is not enough copper in the pcb which resulted in overheating. Looking through reports it seems like there are many reports of the controller board on kitchen aid dishwashers producing either smoke or fire or both.
