Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20220922-3B20D-2147353721. Severity: Injury, Emergency Department Treatment Received. Product: Hayward C1750 (Hayward In Pool Pump Filter Canister: Star Clear probably 10-15 years old. They still make and sell this style canister called "Star Clear"). Incident: Dear Madam and/or Sir I wanted to report injuries I sustained from the lid of an exploding filter canister for our in-ground pool. My hope is that you will increase safety requirements on pool filter canisters. On Saturday, August 27, 2022 I was cleaning the filter for our pool pump. The Hayward Filter Canister exploded after I turned the water pressure back on and it hit me in the face and knocked me to the ground. The victim of course can be blamed as I am a 78 year-old woman, the canister is probably at least 10 years old and no professional taught me how to do this. But, I had been doing it successfully for at least 10 years. This should not have happened. After reading some articles on-line and talking with others I thought I should let you know the damage done to me as you may want to address this issue in a way to protect others in the future. The impact of the lid hitting my face and knocking me to the ground scared me, so I yelled for my husband who luckily was home. He got me a towel to rest my head on and soak up some of the bloodand he called 911. The EMTs on the ambulance, of course, took my vitals and started asking all kinds of questions. Eventually, I was helped to sit up and transferred to a stretcher to take me to the ER. In the ER I had a CT Scan, stiches above my eye and stiches below my eye on the cheek bone. The area above my lip and part of my lip was cut all the way through so it was stitched outside and then inside my mouth. I was given a referral for a plastic surgeon to address my broken nose. My skull was in-tact. I did have one upper front too
